DCMI - System i/ iSERIES/ AS400 Q & A Answers

12a)
You can establish a direct connection to your ISP via these methods:

  • an incoming/outgoing standard dial up line, connected to a modem, connected to an asynchronous line on iSeries 400, configured for serial line interface protocol (SLIP)
  • an incoming/outgoing frame relay line, connected to a special digital converter (usually a csu/dsu or frame relay access device), connected to a 2666 communications adapter on iSeries 400, with a frame relay line configured on iSeries 400
  • an incoming/outgoing X.25 line, connected to a special digital converter (usually a csu/dsu or packet handling device), connected to a 2666 communications adapter on iSeries 400, with an X.25 line configured on the iSeries
  • an incoming/outgoing leased line, connected to a special digital converter (usually a csu/dsu or code/decode device), connected to a 2666 communications adapter on iSeries 400, with an X.25 line configured on the iSeries
  • an incoming/outgoing ISDN line, connected to a special digital converter (usually a terminal adapter or ISDN modem), connected to a 2666 communications adapter on iSeries 400, with an X.25 line configured on iSeries 400
  • The advantages of the SLIP asynchronous connection are ease of implementation, it is generally inexpensive, and it supports dial out and dial in operation. The disadvantages are that it is slow (maximum of 19.2k bit rate), only one active dial in or out connection is possible on each line, and its outbound functionality is quite limited.

The main advantage of the other types of direct connection are that they support multiple incoming and outgoing connections. For example, you can be serving up web pages to external users, and receiving a file via FTP simultaneously. Depending on the speed, monthly costs range from about $300/month for a 56k frame relay line, to $2000/month for a dedicated lease line at T1 speed. This is a very good option if you want to serve web pages, anonymous FTP, and e-mail from iSeries 400. It is also good if your users can get by with using the command line to access Internet resources. It is a very poor option if your users want access to Internet resources from pc applications such as a web browser or a graphical FTP application.
