Cleanup Day

May 15, 2004 is the date for our annual Cleanup Day. As many of you know, it is a day to get outdoors and spiff up our neighborhood - dig up a few weeds, trim some shrubs, pick up trash that has blown in over the winter and talk with folks you haven't seen in awhile. It is always a lot of fun and we hope you will join us. We will start at Ralph and Janet Hanna's (14141 E. Maplewood) at 9:00am for the usual coffee and juice and donuts (LaMar's this time!) and passing out of trash bags and "pickup sticks." Lunch will be served around 11:30am and all residents of Sanctuary are invited to lunch, whether or not you make the cleanup activities. Signup sheets will be at your door soon so we know how many to plan for lunch. Please be sure to respond, and put that date on your calendar now.

Annual Homeowners Meeting Notes

Our Annual Sanctuary HOA meeting was held December 3, 2003 at Valley Country Club with approximately half our homeowners attending. We elected one new board member, Andy Tysler as Vice President, and Joe Dirks moved into the President position. Dale Jensen remains Treasurer. The 2004 budget was unanimously approved and committee reports given included Design Review - 22 requests this year; Social Committee - several get-togethers successfully accomplished and Cup O'Cheer planned for December 7; Grounds Committee - plans for extra landscaping for 2004 in common areas. There was also discussion on the need soon to replace or repair the fence along Jordan Rd. but no decision was made pending investigation of costs.

Thank you!

The annual Cup O'Cheer was a grand success for another year, thanks to our hosts Greg and Theresa Damian. There was lots of wonderful food and lively conversation and a good deal of laughter. This is always one of our most popular events and your Social Committee hopes you can make plans to attend this year's event. If you would care to volunteer your home to host this holiday party, please call Jean Roup at 303-400-8113.

Coyotes

Living among the variety of wild life as we do at Sanctuary on the Park, we have the opportunity to get that rare closer look. Here are some facts about coyotes that may be of interest. Historically, coyotes were most found on the Great Plains of North America. Their range now extends from Central America to the Arctic. They live in all of the United States, except Hawaii.

Coyotes look like a small collie, with erect pointed ears, slender muzzle and bushy tail. Most are brownish gray with a light gray to cream colored belly but color can vary somewhat. Males weigh between 25-45 pounds and females weigh 22-35 pounds. They live just about anywhere, from deserts to swamps, below sea level to high mountains and have also learned to live in suburbs and cities like New York and Denver.

Coyotes are omnivores and eat both meat and plants, including rabbits, carrion, rodents, small deer, insects (such as grasshoppers) and fruit. They will also eat dogs and cats. They are most active at night and during the early morning hours. They bed in sheltered areas but not necessarily dens. They have good eyesight and a keen sense of smell. Coyotes usually breed in February and March and have pups in April and May, litters averaging 5-7 pups. Both male and female hunt and bring food to their young who are usually weaned by six weeks but will stay with the parents until fall.

Most of the time coyotes and humans live in harmony. Since they are scavengers they help keep the area free from dead animals. We can keep them from being a problem by observing some simple rules:
- Do not feed them
- Pick up and securely dispose of trash
- Keep pets inside at night
- Don't leave pet food and water outside at night

Finally, a true fact: In spite of being hunted and trapped for over 200 years, there are more coyotes today than there were when the constitution was signed.
