Homeowners Meeting Notes

The quarterly Sanctuary HOA meeting was held Wednesday, October 12th at the home of Allan and Winnie Kortz. Joe Dirks and Norm Klein are currently working on budget figures for 2006 to be presented at the annual meeting on December 7th. We are currently operating within our budget and a system for automatic withdrawal of dues payments from checking accounts may be available soon. One item of clarification was brought up - responsibility for damaged trees. If the tree is on private property (your own yard) the homeowner is responsible. If the tree is in our common areas the Grounds Committee will handle repair or replacement. There is a great need for more involvement from homeowners in serving on committees. Grounds Committee and the Design Review Committee would like some new members, if interested call Joe Dirks (for Grounds) 303-699-9439 or Carol Race (Design Review) 303-400-3451. There will be one board position vacated at the end of this year and nominations are solicited to fill this vacancy. You can nominate yourself! Call Joe Dirks for more information or an application form. Come on people - get involved!

Social Committee
The sixth annual Cup O' Cheer will be held on December 4th at the home of Barbara Sydow, 6274 S. Blackhawk Ct. This is one of our most popular events and we hope you will put the date on your calendar now and plan to attend. You should have received a flyer giving details and requesting your response. The Social Committee has a new Chair; we welcome Joan Liebchen to leadership of this fun group. And we thank Jean Roup for her years of faithful service. If you would like to serve on this committee or have ideas for events we would all enjoy, please call Joan at 303-400-3389.
Do you enjoy baking cookies but never have time to bake an assortment for the holidays? Come join our Cookie Baking Event. We will meet at Cherry Creek H.S. on Wednesday, November 16th at 3:30pm in the Home Ec Lab. Bring your recipe, your prepared dough, your own timer and go home with samples from everyone who attends. If interested, please call Marilyn Fitzgerald, 303-690-5040 for more information and directions.

It's about those Lagomorphs!

I got a call the other morning from our good neighbor, Roseanne Robinson. She called my attention to an article that morning in the News by Gary Gerhardt. He wrote about the differences between hares, pikas and cottontails. He also gave some interesting facts about their breeding habits, range and lifespan. I've covered many of these in an earlier article for this esteemed publication. For the purpose of this article, though, I want to concentrate on just one:

FACT : They reach sexual maturity in 6 months and bear four to eight litters a year with three to eight young in each litter!

This is the reason, I suppose, that we would have to be either blind or operating on another wave length to not notice the proliferation of these critters in our community.
They are in such great numbers that it has become a problem rather than merely an interesting sidelight to living this close to nature. I even lost my yearly competition with my neighbor Ron Robinson (gardener extraordinaire) because of the little devils.
They devoured my morning glory plants, stems and all ( I still haven't figured our why they left his alone). I have heard numerous other stories involving our little "friends", like the adventures of walking barefoot in the yard, picking dead young ones from the window wells and children being delighted to find those small tasty morsels on the driveway.

O.K., what can we do about this other than forming armed hunting parties? Here is a look at the cause and first step I think we need to take, and why.
