Arapahoe Road Corridor Study

On February 23rd, Linda Massey and Carol Race attended Public Meeting #1 on the Arapahoe Road Corridor Study. This is to be an 18 month "corridor transportation study to address regional mobility and local accessibility needs now and well into the future" for Arapahoe Road from I-25 to Parker Road. Anyone having questions about the meeting should call Linda or Carol. Those interested in the study can see all of the information from the meeting at the Study's web site:

Design Review Committee

The Design Review Committee has chosen two options for anyone interested in replacing exterior lighting fixtures. The original fixtures are still available. The alternative fixtures were chose based on color, size and similar style. Pictures are displayed in the community bulletin board boxes near the mailboxes. Please contact Anne Nelson at 303-690-6177 or Rosanne Robinson at 303-400-6600 if you would like to see more pictures, pricing and additional information on the various fixtures. Group discount prices are available to all who order before May 15, 2006 when a combined order will be placed.

Got Trees?

Joe Dirks reports that the Arapahoe Water District has some extra trees we can have for the asking; he will investigate how much it will cost to have them trucked over here. Any homeowner will be able to plant them in their yard, as long as they don't interfere with neighbors' views (or cause any other inconvenience.) If you are interested in obtaining these free trees, call Joe Dirks at 303-699-9439 for information.

Neighborhood Garage Sale

Start sorting out and saving your "stuff" for a neighborhood garage sale. For a small fee you can get rid of your accumulated clutter, clean out your garage, chat with your neighbors and maybe trade some of your "stuff" for some of theirs! You might even make a few dollars. Look for a flyer giving date and details soon.

BUNCO = BIG FUN!

Bunco is still alive and well in our neighborhood. It is the perfect opportunity for the women in our community to get together for a fun time - lots of laughter, chatter, dessert and a chance to get to know each other better. Bunco is a simple dice game, easy to learn with absolutely no skill involved. We meet the second Thursday of every month from 7-9pm and welcome new players gladly. The next "game" will be on May 11th at the home of Winnie Kortz - call her at 303-400-8313 to reserve your spot.

The Family Accipitridae  (Continued...)

Orientation during this migration seems to be based on visual cues (landmarks) and their experience that leads them to the same wintering areas year after year. Juvenile hawks may orient by an innate drive that causes them to migrate from the nest site in a particular direction, but are likely led to a specific location by following other Ferruginous Hawks. During this period, the adults, especially the females, disappear abruptly and begin flying purposefully at a specific direction for the next several days. Adult males will migrate shortly afterward when the last juvenile is fully independent and food is no longer being delivered to them.

They have been known to live for 20 years in the wild, but most probably die within the first five years. First years mortality has been estimated at 66 per cent and the adult mortality at 25 per cent. Reasons for death include illegal shooting, loss of satisfactory food supply, harassment, predation and starvation of nestlings during time of low food supply. Ground nests are particularly susceptible to predation by coyotes, great horned owls and golden eagles.
