Meet Your Neighbors

Folks have been coming and going on Blackhawk Ct. over the summer and we have two new neighbors to introduce.

Harvey and Rita Starr moved into 6224 S. Blackhawk. Harvey is a retired police officer and Rita is retired from Hyatt Hotels. They moved here from Kentucky and are enjoying our quirky Colorado weather (so far!) The Starr's phone number is 303-537-2748.

Alfredo O'Hagan and his son Christopher are the new residents at 6271 S. Blackhawk. Christopher is eight years old and lives with his dad half time. Their phone number is 303-708-8883

Helpful Resources

Jeld~Wen Windows and Doors is the installation company the builder used for windows in our neighborhood. They are warranted for 20 years to the original owner. Their number is 866-456-3667 (toll free.) If you have problems with leaking seals, pressure breaks, fogging, and etc. they are the folks to call.

Environmental Stone - The stonework on our homes is still under warranty. If you are experiencing problems with the stone façade falling off your home or any other issues, please call Steve at 303-356-6628

The Board would like to suggest that if you have had work done at your home for any reason, and you are pleased with the results, you pass on the names of contractors and service companies to either the Board members, or the Sentinel Editor for compilation into a list we can all access. And likewise, if you have had a not-so-wonderful experience, it would be helpful to pass that on also. As our homes pass the 5-year mark routine maintenance will need to be done (painting, stucco, floor refinishing, etc.) If a number of us contract for work done at the same time, we might be able to negotiate a more favorable price.

Bunco Babes are Beautiful!

Girls - don't miss out on the fun! We play Bunco the second Thursday of every month at one of our members' homes, 7-9pm. Bunco is a fast-paced, easy to learn game, which allows for lots of conversation, laughter and fellowship. We'd love to have some new faces - you can play regularly or just substitute once in awhile. Our next game will be November 10th, come join us. Call Janet Hanna to sign up or for more information, 303-400-0398.

Lagamorphs! Continued...

Our problem stems from the fact that they are establishing their warrens (a group of rabbits is a herd. A herd of rabbits living in one area is a warren) close up to the houses, especially under slabs of concrete, such as porches, patios etc. This also puts them in closer proximity to the more abundant food sources. By closing these "digs" off and preventing them from establishing these warrens we will force them back out into the common area where nature can provide some control, through predation and other natural means. For one thing, the female rabbit operates in a smaller range (less than 1 acre) which will help keep a percentage of them out of the yards and gardens.

To close these warrens off, fill in the entrance with dirt and rock, then use wire screening or metal sheeting to block the entrance. Place the barrier at least two to three inches or more below the surface to discourage them from digging under. They can be especially resourceful (what else do they have to do, except eat and breed ?), so you may have to be persistent. With a community effort along these lines maybe we can at least mollify the problem.

Will it totally solve it? Probably not. But at least maybe I will have a shot at winning the morning glory contest again.

Is anyone interested in caroling the neighborhood in December? Jim Banman and Joan Searcy tried to get a group together last year but didn't have many participants - wouldn't you like to wander our streets and treat your neighbors to some joyful singing? An exuberant spirit is more important than a booming baritone or symphonic soprano. No auditions! If you are interested, call Joan at 303-617-6272 and we'll see if we can come up with a date for some caroling and "cheer."
